Foreword by Kyle Kramer, Ph.D.We live in a world much different than that of our ancestors of even one hundred years ago. Many of us are exposed to industrial chemicals (cleaning products, plasticizers, and cosmetics), air pollution, and tainted water on a daily basis.
The reality is our world is full of toxins and under some conditions, our bodies even generate them. The stress we endure can stimulate the release of hormones that contribute to the formation of what are loosely termed prooxidants (reactive oxygen species) and in turn, we consume antioxidants (i.e., vitamin C) to hopefully counteract this imbalance. Stress or “oxidative stress response” also impacts digestion of the foods we consume, as well as the metabolism of endogenous hormones (i.e., estrogen and testosterone) that regulate our homeostasis. Additionally, these stress factors also impact the metabolism of pharmaceuticals and herbal supplements many of us consume along with the absorption of nutrients.
Thankfully, the human body is very forgiving and allows us to heal naturally through detoxification. Detoxification can be bolstered through a deep internal cleanse of the body and its intestinal system, which, in many situations, provides the mind and body a major boost.
